Ruth Boreham - Historical Researcher
Family history, or genealogy as it is sometimes known, has taken off in a big way in recent years, helped by numerous
television and radio programmes, and a plethora of books, magazines and articles. So much can be done on the internet now, but there is still a place for the researcher.
Family history isn't always easy, and I can help; whether it is from the very beginning or once you have exhausted
the material available online. There is a wealth of material which can add much colour to the family tree which is only available in archives, for example poor law records, school log books and kirk session minutes. The beauty of family history is that you never know what you will find!
Archives I have used so far include (although am happy to go outside of these places!):
- General Register House of Scotland, Edinburgh
- Mitchell Library, Glasgow
- The British Library, London
- Moray Heritage Centre, Elgin
- Bodleian Library, Oxford
- Special Collections, Reading
- The National Archives of Scotland, Edinburgh
- The National Archives (formerly PRO), London
- The National Library of Scotland, Edinburgh
- The Family History Centre, London
- The Imperial War Museum, London
- The House of Lords Archives, London
- The London Metropolitan Archives, London
- Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Record Office
- Suffolk Records Offices, Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds
- Northamptonshire Record Office, Northampton
